The Written Story

How it works

From your questions to a story, in four steps

You choose the questions

Twenty-five of them: three from each of eight categories, and one you write yourself. Here they are the starting frame, not the finished shape.

Three or four conversations

The later calls go back over what the first ones opened up, which is where the endings usually arrive. We offer a first conversation within three weeks of your order.

It is written as a story

Two answers from two different afternoons can sit side by side and mean something together; a question-and-answer book keeps them three pages apart. About 16,000 words, with two rounds of revisions included, bound as a 6 × 9 inch hardback.

They see it first, then you approve it

The storyteller approves what appears before you do, and may remove anything without giving a reason. Fourteen to sixteen weeks from that first conversation.

Further editing beyond the two rounds included is $95 an hour, always agreed with you before it starts. Photographs can be included — if they are, the whole book is printed in colour on white paper rather than cream, because that is how the printer works.
